Description

The Reverend Libero Sauro, 1891-1971

2023

Transcribed letters on handmade paper, 36 x 48 x 8 inches, courtesy of the artist.

My grandfather was an Italian Canadian, interned at Camp Petawawa for four months during WWII while his five oldest children were serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was wrongfully accused of being a fascist sympathizer and enemy alien of the state because of his association with the Sons of Italy, a benevolent society within the Italian community. In this tapestry, I incorporated Clementina’s letters and Libero’s letter to the Globe and Mail (post-internment), which describe his treatment before being sent to the camp.
