Description

Italo Sauro, 1919-2000

2024

Transcribed letters on handmade paper, 24 x 36 x 8 inches, courtesy of the artist.

From 1943 to 1945, Uncle Italo served as a signalman with the Irish Regiment in the Italian campaign to help liberate Holland. Despite the risk of being shot by German soldiers, he had to go ahead of his troops to determine if it was safe to advance on the battlefield. In my Aunt Sylvia’s biography, she wrote that when Uncle Italo returned home to his wife and children, he came back as an altered person and could not speak of his experiences. My uncle suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), like many other soldiers who swore to secrecy.
