Sylvia was my mother’s older sister. She was a woman of many talents—among them, teacher, musician, weaver, paper maker, and bookbinder. Before she passed away, my aunt gave me a large collection of her handmade papers. To honour her, I used these papers to create four portraits inspired by Andy Warhol’s screen prints of iconic women. This is one of those portraits. Family members contributed stories, words, and phrases in her memory, which I printed on her paper, then tore and stitched the fragments into the background of each tapestry. This tribute to my aunt would inspire me to use her handmade paper to create all of the family tapestries in this exhibition.
