Inspired by her Italian Canadian heritage and the life stories of her ancestors, fibre artist and dancer Loretta Faveri invites us to encounter tapestries of memory, hardship, and resilience. Captured Moments spotlights the often overlooked and forgotten history of Italian Canadians who were forced into internment by the Canadian government during the Second World War.
When Italy declared war on Great Britain and her allies, Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced 31,000 Italian Canadians as “enemy aliens” and ordered that those considered most dangerous be sent to three internment camps in Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick. Between 1940 and 1943, more than 600 Italian Canadians, including Faveri’s grandfather, were interned under the War Measures Act. None of them were ever officially charged with a crime in a court of law.
By transcribing and stitching letters written by family into shadow portraits of her ancestors, Faveri assembles fragments of the past to honour her…
