The exhibition “Hawaiian Hills” presents two new bodies of work by Michail Pirgelis as a site-specific spatial installation spanning both floors of Kunstraum München. The works consist of original aircraft parts with red-and-white stripes - abstracted fragments of flags. Through cutting and surface treatment, the artist intervenes in the design of the found material to varying degrees. Conceptually and serially structured, the works, with their red stripes on white ground and consistent format, recall abstract paintings of Minimal Art. By contrast, the title “Hawaiian Hills” opens up a space of longing that seems to stand in opposition to the conceptual working method.
Pirgelis presents these uniformly sized works on a custom-developed, autonomous, freestanding exhibition display. This creates a permeable body in space that measures and occupies it, while simultaneously emphasizing the sculptural quality of both the individual works and the installation as a whole.
