General Expenses is pleased to present Meadowlands, a two-person exhibition featuring Catherine Mulligan and Philip Hinge. Taking its name from the enigmatic ecosystem of wetlands in New Jersey—home to sports arenas, industrial ruins, and a history of clandestine waste dumping—the show displays how beauty and obsession have influenced their practice. Mulligan’s oil paintings depict portraits of hyper-feminine women, not far away from models, surrounded by an eerie landscape with a Y2K aesthetic bringing back the uneasy tensions between the concept of beauty and the dark side of how to achieve or maintain it. Hinge, navigates the thin line between humor and seriousness, exploring through contemporary painting his obsession with cats into works that blend historical and modern representations of them through time, bringing into question the high and low cultural legacies.
