Kerida Mia [My Beloved], you may recognize this place from when I sang to you in my womb: a safe space where you can regulate your nervous system, where you are nourished effortlessly, where you can hear yourself breathe. By digitally stitching together images of the lace and embroidery
made by your great-great grandmother Julia Bejarano, I wove a web of song and a portal to re-enter a metaphorical uterine space. Using a time-lapse technique and video editing software, I created a moving mandala; a new media version of the “Wandering Textiles” technique as described by the Sephardic scholar Mikal Held. The embroidery hoop was a portal that permitted Sephardic women to travel beyond the confines of the domestic sphere; while they worked they sang medieval Ladino folk songs as a secondary means of time travel and escapism.
