repurposed clothing, textiles and lace remnants, lake stones, sugar, salt, dried rue, knit wool, found metal scraps

Kerida Mia [My Beloved], I sewed an intergenerational portrait of our family’s history of trauma and resilience. Somewhere at the intersection of ritual, epigenetics and the healing arts, this ancestral dress reimagines the folk medicine, magic and needlework of our great-grandmothers to consider ancestral healing as a technology of time travel, one in which the impact of healing moves backward and forwards in time. The women of the Sephardic Diaspora would repurpose and embroider domestic items like pillowcases, clothing and tablecloths, transforming them into ceremonial wrappings covered in metaphysical images. The wandering nature of the textiles implies a fluidity between the domestic, mystical, and public spheres that Sephardic women were not allowed to experience during the postexpulsion period in the Ottoman…
