Kerida Mia [My Beloved], my suitcase was full of dirt and moss from the former Jewish cemetery paved over by a church courtyard in our ancestral village of Béjar. I decided to honour our displaced ancestors by creating an amulet bag, a portable nomadic tombstone, a gateway to the divine while imagining an object that Sephardic women could have used to rest their head in exile. Each of the ten white square pockets on the pillowcase resemble the Tree of Life diagram, a mystical map of the human body from an ancient Jewish text known as the Kabbalah. The embroidery blends my Mama Julia’s cutwork tablecloth patterns created in the Sephardic Diaspora, with observations of different lake stones I collected from my…
