Sarah welcomes me inside the Cité des Arts residency. I have left my winter coat in the closet and am wearing, or so it seems to me, an outfit that suggests relaxation and the first hints of summer. Sarah’s bangs have not moved; they are still as perfect as ever. That impresses me. The walls are immaculate and a white light illuminates the entire room. The windows look out onto the inner courtyard, and my gaze repeatedly settles on the ivy engulfing a distant window. I do not particularly like this plant. My mother often spoke of it as an invasive species, swarming with intractable little beasts, and so I built up a repulsive, terrifying image of it.
In this fake square covered in green linoleum, two single beds cross at a right angle. One runs along the window, while the other is wedged against a white wall in front of the broom closet that…
