Latefa Wiersch creates art that examines questions of identity and the body in a post-colonial present. The people in her installation slip into the “shoes” of their ancestors, while in her collaborative performance with New Kyd and Tiran Willemse they get to feel, develop and play out a new self. The precision of Latefa Wiersch’s emotional language infects her audience, too. Perhaps this explains why children, in particular, are so fascinated by her performances as places that connect “the banal and the bizarre, the blithe and the brutal, the emotive and the absurd”, writes Alice Henkes.
