Biography
Kolja Kärtner Sainz (b. 1998 in Mannheim) is an artist living and working in Leipzig. He studies photography and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB), with graduation in July 2026.
Kärtner Sainz‘s painting is driven by his search for new relationships between abstraction and figuration. His works can be characterized as network-like topographies—each mark, simultaneously an assertion and a question. In an iterative process with oil and ink, traces and temporalities are soaked and folded into the painting‘s skin like sediments of thought in motion. Gestures and forms act as recurring elements of an open sign system: they mark, refer, interrupt and connect without settling into fixed symbols. These are paintings that refuse a linear reading and instead embrace the ever-shifting nature of perception and contemporary chaos.
