Jonathan Podwil (born 1966, Philadelphia PA) is a painter and experimental filmmaker and animator.

He is known for modestly scaled series of images which are loaded with historical and political meaning, yet oblique. Some of these images have been developed over decades, using only earlier versions of paintings as reference. He isolates moments from the media noise. He takes up themes such as the disappearance of nature, the crisis of mobility, or the horrors of film history from Hiroshima to the storming of the Capitol in Washington in January 2021 - and captures them in his own unique painterly cosmos.

He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Malmö Konstskola Forum, Sweden. Since the late 1990s Jonathan Podwil has lived and worked in New York City. His first New York City exhibition was at the John McEnroe Gallery in 1997.
