A conversation between Augustin Katz and Gigiotto Del Vecchio

Gigiotto Del Vecchio: Augustin, how did the idea for this exhibition develop?

Augustin Katz: The concept grew out of my exploration of ‘the architecture of the mind’. I was interested in visualising the subconscious as something spatial - like corridors and rooms that we inhabit. I began to wonder: could this subconscious take the form of a hotel, a villa, or perhaps an endless sewer? Or is it something purely geometric, a theatre stripped of its essence, existing beyond time and space?

GDV: It is a surprising image. Was there a specific element that inspired this vision?

AK: Yes. Looking at the images of the gallery and its outdoor space, the beach: I perceived the presence of the natural elements of Naples - the caves, the volcanoes, the sea - each one imbued with myth and legend. These elements led me to see the subconscious as something vast and primordial, like a whale.

GDV: What does the whale mean to you?

AK: It reminds me…
