Irrlicht refers to the phenomenon of mysterious orbs of light appearing in swamplands. Folklore across the globe suggests these small luminous entities have a sinister allure, causing people to lose their ways, minds, and lives. Literally, “mistaken light,” the German word implies a misguiding force bringing one to the depths of madness. The allegory of Irrlicht –known as fuego fátuo or “pointless fire” in Mexico– illuminates the magnetism of all things mysterious and fleeting, binding enchantment to abyss.
While science offers chemical explanations –which, via quantum electrodynamics, only return us to mysteries of matter and energy– the lights are commonly interpreted as bodiless spirits. It’s less the idea of a “ghost” itself but rather the emotional projections placed onto such entities that emerge in these paintings.
A light, or anything else, provoking an all-consuming desire: this is fetish. A proxy for consuming, wanting to be consumed, to approach the unknowable and deathless.…
