Bringing together Vienna-based and international artists working across sculpture, sound, painting, text, performance and installation, Room Tone explores the relationships between acoustic phenomena – sound, speech, frequencies, vibrations – and somatic and nervous states. The exhibition unfolds throughout a defunct gym deep beneath the Funkhaus, playing on the myriad connotations of the word tone: from musical pitch to vocal modulation and the general character of a situation, to the contraction of muscles at rest, or the level of activity in a nerve fiber. The outcome of a one-month residency at Never At Home, Room Tone is the first iteration of The New Neurasthetics, an ongoing curatorial research project examining the contemporary resurgence of the nervous system as a cultural and somatic paradigm.
