This is the second edition of Odesa, Texas, and yes, we continue to talk about the places that we carry inside. This time, however, we look at them up close. Within the vague limits of this invented geography, we are trying to describe something that constantly shifts and mutates. This edition is co-curated by Kristina Borhes and invited artist/curator Yaroslav Solop.
A place remembered is never quite the place itself. The practices gathered here revolve around the (im)possibility of fixing memory in an image. The artists in the exhibition approach this instability through fragmentation, repetition, overlapping, distortion, and deliberate blind spots. They move away from the complete image in search of one that feels truthful. Paradoxically, the closer they come to emotional truth, the more abstract this image becomes.
It is fascinating, though hardly surprising, how many artists in Ukraine work with personal and collective memory as if it were a material. They handle it carefully,…
