From the Symbolist poets of the nineteenth century to the postcards popularized shortly thereafter, culture—both elite and popular—absorbed the figure of Pierrette as an archetype of the alienated artist; one dreamy and vulnerable figure facing a treacherous reality. Pierrot is a character from the Commedia dell’arte; silent in the night, dressed in white, drifting between dream and wakefulness with its melancholic play.
