Roll-Ups is a name I coined for the wall-mounted objects (intended as neither strictly painting nor sculpture) made from the process of rolling up old works in my studio.
The form of the rolled canvas is common for cheap transport and economical storage. Facing the painted side out is safer for the paint film long term.
These works emerged out of a process of stripping failed paintings from their supports and cataloguing works from a 2025 period of ground painting (works painted unstretched on the floor). Once rolled and formally displayed, they assumed a stature and autonomy that they didn’t have before. That being said, some of the Roll-Ups feature appropriated artworks.
In its rolled-up form, the mass of a painted surface is concealed and in order to see the original unhappy painting would mean damaging, likely permanently, its new object form.
These works have no face or picture plane. Any encounter with a Roll-Up comes with the attendant knowledge that from any perspective there is a…
