Kunstverein in Hamburg presents Sample Question, Nina Porter’s first institutional solo exhibition. On the occasion of the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026, the artist presents new commissioned works.
Sample Question reflects on matter in its elemental and smallest manifestations, positioning a series of photographs as a conceptual point of departure. The photographs on view resemble portraits of electrically charged fibers. They are abstractions that capture the enigmatic process of reflexive self-becoming, which transcends the state of inanimate things. The objects depicted in the images recede from view, like an electrical charge that briefly animates the textile fibers. In this way, the objects depicted in the images retreat from focus, like the electrical charge that briefly animates the strands of fabric. Instead, what comes to the fore is the becoming of these elements when they appear together, and the radiance they emit in the process.
