Women I loved 내가 사랑한 여자들 focuses on Mire Lee’s film practice and comprises a selection of the artist’s moving image works.

Sleeping Mom is composed of a single continuous shot, screened on loop, depicting the artist’s mother in a long and uninterrupted sleep. The work was first exhibited in 2020 at Art Sonje Center as part of the exhibition Carriers, which featured a group of sculptures bearing the same name. These large kinetic sculptures using a hose pump and resembling entrails, function as a stand-in for beings that carry; an analogy for the artist’s own mother, who is essentially her “carrier”; a person who takes care of someone else, someone who provides. The title also references Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and describes the class of women whose role is to give birth.

In Faces from 2016 Mire Lee assembles fragments from Japanese grope porn showing women in the subway moments right before acts of violence occur. The work was commissioned by SeMA…
