Press Release

The Mongolian painter and video artist Javkhlan Ariunbold (*1990 in Ulaanbaatar; lives and works in Cologne) draws in her art on the myths and legends of her homeland, in which nature deities and sacred beings, often in animal form, play a central role. “Manggus,” the title of her exhibition at the Kallmann Museum, translates from Mongolian as “monster” and refers to a mysterious figure that personifies evil. We all know such figures from fairy tales and myths, and they also played an important role in the stories told by Ariunbold’s parents and grandparents.

For Ismaning, Ariunbold has created a multi-room installation composed of paintings, videos, and expansive, colorful wall drawings, through which she transports viewers into the mythic world of her earlier homeland, Mongolia. The exhibition is thematically based primarily on the fairy tale “The Story of Galav,” which was passed down orally for centuries and first written down in 1977. It deals with the creation of the universe.
