OPEN END is dedicated to the conditions of artistic self-organization, its spaces for action, and its long-term continuities. The exhibition brings together two documentary approaches: the VHS video archive of Kunstraum Friesenwall 120 (1990–1994), with Stephan Dillemuth, and the episodic film THEATER by Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff. In both, even in the absence of a physical space, the archive and the narrative themselves become an ongoing practice that continues to develop over time.
The VHS video archive from Friesenwall 120 accumulated over the years in the back room of the Cologne art space, growing into an extensive collection and serving as a model for a counter-public: 800 VHS tapes containing exhibition documentation, artists’ films, activist material, and excerpts from television. During OPEN END, the archive will be collectively viewed, activated, and digitized.
