— Art always has something to do with ideas of time and space. In his essay on Laocoön, Lessing affirms that sculpture has to do with the deployment of bodies in space whereas poetry/literature depicts actions in time. Time-based art Versus space-based art. Passing time Versus stopped time. Movement Versus Stillness.
Lessing says something very beautiful: that the distress we feel when looking at the pain expressed in Laocoön’s face is transformed into pity because it’s beautiful. That’s kind of what sublime means.
But as for the question of space and time, his summary is too oppositional… especially given that Laocoön, to take this sculptural masterpiece as an example, is… how should I put it? That sculpture is what it is because time took away some of its parts. This is the main idea in Marguerite Yourcenar’s book That Mighty Sculptor, Time.
