It has become commonplace and tempting to reduce our identities into their simplest forms — to find a single root to blame

or cherish. The fact that each of us is uniquely made up of an untraceable multitude of influences is not normally helpful or

productive.


Painting — and even more so, drawing — offers an opportunity to untangle ourselves, or to offer up the ingredients of our

own deconstructed salad, reconstituted for inspection.


If we look, we find ourselves vulnerable.
