Divulging Secrets through Tales of Strange Occurrences

In China there is a genre of literature known as zhiguai xiaoshuo, which could be translated as “tales of strange occurrences” or “stories about unusual things.” Such literature has sometimes been regarded as a precursor to fiction. Whatever the case may be, anthologies of zhiguai xiaoshuo narrate fantastic events involving strange beings, unusual situations, or encounters with extraordinary worlds. Despite its peculiar nature and marginal status, the genre has surreptitiously shaped the semi-official history of China. In Ghost Stories / Cuentos de fantasmas, Chantal Peñalosa Fong draws on the structure of these tales in order to weave a coherent narrative out of fragments of her family history, which was marked by anti-Chinese persecution in Baja California during the 1920s and ’30s.
