In the summer of 1897, Austrian engineer Theodor Scheimpflug (1865–1911) and three companions – all invested in cartography – undertook the mapping of the Soča Valley, near Trenta in northern Slovenia. His stay in the Julian Alps led Scheimpflug to develop the idea of creating maps through aerial photography. On the one hand, he devoted his efforts to building and testing kites to lift a camera into the air. On the other, he sought a way to correct the perspectival distortion that occurs when photographing from great height.


Scheimpflug believed that aerial photography held immense technical, political and economic potential for surveying and mapping colonies and battlefields. The entanglement of this technique with its fraught historical applications still resonates today: Scheimpflug’s successful inventions live on in photogrammetry and continue to shape how aerial imaging defines the way we look at and act upon the earth.
