Before the first sleeper is laid. Before the coughing, sputtering and the soot.
We are now walking through an old world without awareness of the body.
Outside blurs into focus: “normal life,” the specter of spectacle.¹
A Christendom of locations.
Bruegel and his friends sneak out of the city to visit the last ever peasant kermis.²
The owl of Minerva spreads her wings at dusk.
These people have become necessary but they aren’t conscious yet.
They stumble back to their chambers as the pale sun rises.
The old methods are more trouble than they’re worth.
So much backfiring before this thing gets running.
We are now walking through an old world without awareness of the body.
Once the sleepers are down we can add the rails.
¹ In 1908 Dr. Julius Neubronner filed a patent for a 75 gram “Pigeon Camera” which he used to capture some of the first aerial photos of urban Europe.
