The melodic chirping of crickets was highly valued in China from as early as the sixth century. During that time, these insects were kept in cages so that their owners could fall asleep to their song, with the cages often placed right beside the bed. It is assumed that imperial court ladies were the first to attempt to domesticate crickets in this way. From there, this special form of insect appreciation evolved into a scholarly pastime: the melodious long-horned grasshoppers became subjects for poetry, stories, and scientific studies.


A wide array of accessories was created for crickets: feeding trays, cleaning brushes, tweezers, and silk sleeping nets furnished their dwellings. Thick-walled containers made of dried gourds—often decorated with intricate engravings—kept the crickets warm during the cold season.
