What is known as “cybernetics,” which emerged in the 1940s in the U.S., is “the science of control and regulation,” in the words of Norbert Wiener (subtitle of his first book on cybernetics), with all the authoritarian implications that the use of the word “control” raises when applied to a societal model. It is a mechanical system that models human intelligence and ultimately aims to replace it. An idea previously confined to futuristic predictions and science fiction.
At the beginning of the last century, it is important to note that two models were competing to simulate the functioning of the human brain. On one side, a model derived from Gestalt theory—a stimulus-response “black box” designed to explain the behavior of living beings. On the other, a model seeking to replicate the neural networks that make up the human brain.
