What is today known as Mies van der Rohe Haus was originally the private residence of Karl and Martha Lemke, which they commissioned from the already well established architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In just a few months, he realized a compact building on a double plot, reduced to the essential spaces, while incorporating the generous garden as an extension of the living area. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, Oberseestraße and the surrounding area became a restricted zone established by the Soviet military, and the Lemkes were forced to leave their home, taking with them the furniture designed by Mies and Lilly Reich to West Berlin. The building subsequently came under the ownership of the GDR’s Ministry for State Security and underwent various uses, until it was made publicly accessible for the first time shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Over decades altered and worn down, Haus Lemke only became the architectural landmark known today through its restoration…
