Furnishing an apartment is not inherently political. First of all, people don’t want to eat off the floor: they set up a table and pull chairs close to give the matter some shape. Ordered fulfillment of needs—eating or sleeping, for which tables and beds are helpful—also includes getting dressed, and soon you need a wardrobe for your clothes. But furniture isn’t only about coping with life. Those who furnish also present themselves. If they read—or at least buy—books, they want others to see that too. On the shelf they display their taste. Yet character shows itself above all in the coat rack and the curtains. Whoever lacks them either has two left hands or loves to exhibit themselves. Taken together, furnishing explains even more than sex why the private is political. Through the way I select my furniture, I speak volumes—just as through all the products I choose. I present myself, and my place on the social ladder becomes clear, with all its advantages and disadvantages. Those who…
