The Entrance to a Forest, the second exhibition in the series Say, Thing. Joan Brossa and the Object Poems, curated by Marc Navarro, takes as its point of departure two object poems that Brossa conceived as tributes which, despite their commemorative nature, might be classified as counter-monuments. First, because they depart from the narrative and formal grandiosity of conventional monuments, and second, because they contribute to restoring the memory of victims rather than celebrating victors. To emphasize this inversion, the exhibition brings into dialogue sculptural, photographic, film, and sound works by artists who, in addressing notions of remembrance, permanence, and absence, avoid epic narratives and monolithic formalism.
If monuments are often conceived as sutures in an official narrative, one that is continually made and unmade yet presented as permanent, the works gathered here point to the excesses and omissions of that narrative. Questions such as anti-war sentiment and…
