My paternal grandmother Lola Susana Acosta Padilla Apilado was the youngest daughter of Simeona Acosta Padilla and Severo Padilla. She came from a family of ules (Ilokano term for blanket) weavers in Bangar, La Union, located in the Philippines. Lola Susana learned how to loom-weave from her mother and older sisters, but she was encouraged to pursue a higher education. After leaving Bangar, she became a geography teacher in Sayangan, Benguet. In the photograph, Lola Susana is wearing traditional Ibaloi clothing with a handwoven back basket in front of a mountainous landscape in Benguet. Having respect for my grandmother’s chosen profession, I also acknowledge the importance of reviving this ancestral practice tied to my family lineage and the rich cultural heritage of the Ilokano people. I see loom-weaving as a labour of love to my matrilineal ancestors whose stories of survival and sacrifice…
