hand embroidery on mother’s silk saree

In this series, I write letters of love, frustration, and longing to my mother and ancestors to reflect on how intergenerational knowledge can be passed down through clothing. These 15- to 20-year-old Kancheepuram silk sarees are traditionally worn by South Indian women for special occasions or weddings. I seek to understand the memories and stories attached to these sarees that were shared between my mother, aunts, and grandmothers. By using a floating embroidery technique, I explore the complexities that come with having a hybrid identity. From the front, the letters appear full; from the back, dotted, empty, and knotted up. In this intimate process of reaching, in this touching and mourning, I feel at home. —Par Nair
